SOFIA in Köln
September 17, 2011 - During its first ever trip to Europe, the "Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy", SOFIA,
made a stop over at the Köln-Bonn Airport. This airport is close to DLR's premises and was welcomed there during the biennal
public "Aerospace Day". SOFIA is a common project between NASA and DLR, offering a unique research facility to the scientists in both
countries.
The visit of SOFIA gave rise to a very special photo opportunity. Inside the flying observatory, the newly installed "GREAT"
instrument was on display, which had just conducted its first measurements in flight. Also a visit to the cockpit was possible.
SOFIA stationed at NASA's Ames Research Center in California. The observatory is in regular operation since the end of 2010.
